the Playmate of the Month was Margie Harrison, in the January 1954
  issue.

- How has the centerfold evolved over the years?

The first two centerfolds were only single page photographs. The
third issue, February 1954, was the first two-page centerfold. The
famous three page fold out centerfold made it's first appearance in
in the March 1956 issue (with Marian Stafford). In October 1985, the
physical format of the magazine changed; instead of being held
together by staples, the magazine was produced with the 'perfect' or
flat binding. So now the centerfold is attached to the magazine at
top of the centerfold, instead of stapled in the first fold. Thus
if the magazine was closed with the centerfold unfolded, two pages
would stick out, instead of one.

- Who was the first Playmate of the Year?

The first official Playmate of the Year was Ellen Stratton, the 1960
Playmate of the Year and the December 1959 Playmate of the Month.

- Who was the first African-American Playmate of the Month?

The first African-American selected as a Playmate of the Month was
Jennifer Jackson. She appeared in the March 1965 issue.

- Who was the first Asian-American Playmate of the Month?

Not sure on this one; may have been China Lee in 1964.

- Who was the first Foreign Playmate of the Month?

? Not sure on this one, either. The best I can guess at the moment is
Elsa Sorensen (September 1956). I just remembered that they titled
her pictorial "Danish Pastry" -- and she was from Denmark.

- Who was the first Playmate to show pubic hair?

The very first appearance of pubic hair was in the August 1969 issue,
by Paula Kelly. However, the first Playmate to show pubic hair was
Liv Lindeland. She appeared in the January 1971 issue. She was also
  the Playmate of the Year.

- Who was the first double sided Playmate of the Month?

The first (and only) double sided Playmate of the Month was Nancy
Cameron. She appeared in the January 1974 issue.

- Who was the last Playmate of the Month in a stapled issue?

The last Playmate of the Month to appear in a stapled issue was Venice
Kong. She appeared in the September 1985 issue.

- Who was the first Playmate of the Month in a glued issue?

The first Playmate of the Month to appear in a glued issue was Cynthia
Brimhall. She appeared in the October 1985 issue.

- Who was the first Playmate with a Data Sheet?

The first first Playmate to appear with a Data Sheet was Sondra
Theodore. She appeared in the July 1977 issue.

- Who was the first Playmate to sign her centerfold?

The first Playmate to sign her center fold was Jill De Vries. She
appeared in the October 1975 issue.

- Who was the youngest Playmate of the Month?

The legal age limit is, of course 18. However, supposedly Elizabeth
Ann Roberts, who appeared in the January 1958 issue, was only 16 at
the time. Her mother accompanied her to her photo session, and
claimed that she was 18. She was also attending college at the time.
Both Playboy and Miss Roberts' mother were charged with something like
contributing to the delinquency of a minor, but charges were later
dropped. The German edition has had at least two Playmates who were
under the age of 18. One was Ursula Buchfellner who appeared in
Germany's December 1977 issue. She was 16 at the time. She later
appeared in American October 1979 issue. Joyce Nizzari and Penny
Baker, who appeared in the December 1958 and January 1984 issues,
were both 18 years old when they posed.

Also, a member of the list claims knowledge of another underage
appearance, but will not disclose his source or the Playmate.

* Who was the oldest Playmate of the Month?

The oldest Playmate of the Month was Cindy Brooks, who appeared in
the April 1985 issue, was 33 years and 5 months old at the time.
  Others 30+ playmates include :
  : Julianna Young (November 1993) 33 years, 2 months
: Kathleen Ann Shower (May 1985) 32 years, 2 months
: Susie Diane Owens (March 1988) 31 years, 10 months
  : Bettie Page (January 1955) 31 years, 9 months
  : Arlene Baxter (December 1993) 31 years, 1 month
  : Janis Schmitt (February 1978) 30 years, 11 months
  : Eloise Broady (April 1988) 30 years, 11 months

* Who was the last anonymous Playmate?

The first centerfolds for Playboy were not actually taken by Playboy
photographers. Playboy purchased nude photographs from calendar
pinup photographers (notably Baumgarten Calendar Company, which
supplied the famous Marilyn Monroe picture). The first Playmate to
pose for Playboy directly was Eve Meyer, for the June 1955 issue.
The last anonymous Playmate was Lynn Turner, in the January 1956
  issue.

- Who are the Anniversary Playmates?

  5th, December 1958, Joyce Nizzari
  10th, December 63, Donna Michelle
  15th, January 69, Leslie Bianchini
20th, January 74, Nancy Cameron (the famous double sided centerfold)
  25th, January 1979, Candy Loving
  30th, January 1984, Penny Baker
  35th, January 1989, Fawna Maclaren
  40th, January 1994, Anna-Marie Goddard

- Who has the most apperances on the cover of Playboy?

Well, besides the rabbit that appears on every cover, I'm not sure.
Femlin has appeared on 8 covers and Cynthia Maddox (who was Playboy's
Assistant Cartoon Editor) and Lillian Muller have been on 5 each.

- How many Playmates have been Playmate of the Month multiple times?

The first Playmate to appear as the Playmate of the Month three times
was Janet Pilgrim. She appeared in the July 1955, December 1955 and
October 1956 issues. Interestingly, she was discovered from within
Playboy. She was Playboy's Subscription Manager.

The first Playmate to appear as the Playmate of the Month twice was
Margie Harrison. She appeared in the January 1954 and June 1954
issues. Others include Marilyn Waltz in the April 1954 and April 1955
issues, and Margurite Empey in the May 1955 and February 1956 issues.

- How many times have there been two Playmates of the Month?

The first issue to feature two Playmates as Playmates of the Month
was the October 1958 issue. The pictorial was titled "Le Rouge et
le Blanc" and featured Pat Sheehan (a blonde) and Mara Corday
(a redhead). The idea was that while some men would prefer one
playmate over the other, the true playboy was a connoisseur and
would appreciate the differing qualities of both equally. Pat
Sheehan appeared on the usual three page foldout. Mara Corday was on
the reverse of the lower two pages of Pat Sheehan's picture, so her
"centerfold" was only two pages. Both said "Miss October / Playboy's
Playmate of the Month" as per usual. The October 1970 and September
1989 issues also had two Playmates. (see the next question)

- How many times have there been twins as Playmates of the Month?

The first issue to feature twins as Playmates of the Month was the
October 1970 issue. It features Mary and Madeleine Collinson. Others
  include :
: Karin and Mirjam van Breeschooten, September 1989
: Sofie and Katrien Vergote, July 1991, Dutch edition

* How many times have sisters or twins independently been Playmates of
  the Month?

Janice Pennington, May 1971; Ann Penington March 1976
Other sisters have appeared, not as Playmates, but in the Newstand
Special "Playboy's Sisters," published in February 1992. Also,
Elaine Morton (May 1971) and Karen Morton (July 1978) were cousins.
The Brazilian edition features Andreia Ramme (August 1993), Josie
Ramme (August 1994), and Tatiana Ramme (October 1994).

- How many Playmates have had daughters who were also Playmates?

This has only happened once, to the best of my knowledge. Carol Eden
was the December 1960 Playmate of the Month; her daughter Simone Eden
followed in her footsteps as the February 1989 Playmate of the Month.
However, Jane Mansfield (Miss February 1955), had a daughter Jayne
Marie Mansfield who posed for a regular pictorial an Tamara Davis
appeared with here daughters Dawn and Shannon in an August 1993
pictorial entitled "Like Mother, Like Daughters."

- How many Playmates have appeared in movies or on television?

Several. The file pm.files.v0.9 at the FTP site contains a list of
  Playmates and their film/television appearances.

- How many Playmates have had the same name?

This has happened twice. A Susie Scott appears in the February 1960
and May 1983 issues; A Jennifer Jackson appears in the March 1965
  and April 1989 issues.

- Where can I get back issues of Playboy?

That depends on what condition you want the issue in. If it is a
fairly recent issue, or a post-1960 issue and you aren't concerned
about scuffs and folded pages/covers, check Appendix B for a dealer
in your local area. If there isn't one, check out the reputable Mail
Order dealers in Appendix C. Generally they have each issue in a
wide range of conditions. It might cost a little more than what you
might pay in a local store, but will probably be in better condition.
You can also watch the local classifieds under collectables for
someone selling their collection at a bargain price. Most of the
time they won't sell individual issues, but it can't hurt to ask.

If you are looking for older issues, or want higher quality older
issues, you'll have to do a little more work. First, check any local
dealers. It's unlikely, but not impossible, that they'll have good
quality magazines, but you may get a bargin! Again, watch the
classified section of your local news paper, under collectables. On
occasion someone will sell an entire collection, often at a good
price. Make sure you see the collection before you buy, and check
the condition of every issue, if you have time.

If you want top quality condition issues, check the list of reputable
dealers in Appendix C. You will definately pay more, but, as they
say, you get what you pay for. You could even place your own ad in
the wanted section, asking for an entire collection in good
condition. And again, watch the classified section of your local
news paper, under collectables. Make sure you see the collection
before you buy it, and check the condition of every issue.

There are also several newsgroups on the internet that regularly have
postings about Playboy magazines for sale. However, it is kind of
risky since you don't know the person, and they usually want payment
in advance. This is ok if you want a fairly cheap issues, but I
wouldn't recommend buying a December 1953 issues without making
arrangements to see it first. Having said that, some of the news-

groups you could check include :

Storage Issues
--------------
- How should I store my back-issues of Playboy?

It really depends on how serious you are and how much money you
have to spend. If you are very very serious, and want permanent,
archival storage, you should use mylar/acid-free bags and boxes, with
acid free backing boards (to prevent corners and edges from wrinkling
and bending). This can be expensive, but will offer the best
  protection for the magazine.

Even if you are very very serious, bear in mind that the circulation
of Playboy increased dramatically in the early 60s. It may be a bit
of overkill to store these more easily obtainable issues with mylar/
acid-free bags and boxes. One of the better suggestions I've heard
was to go all out for the first 100 issues, then use the less
expensive Polyethylene bags for issues after that.

If you are moderately serious, comic shops and collectors shops often
have Polyethylene or plastic bags that will fit Playboy for about 7-8
  dollars per 100.

Some places may have bags that seal (ala ziploc baggies) to make them
airtight. It is generally thought this is bad, because temperature
and air pressure variations could cause water vapor to come out of
the air trapped in the bag, damaging the magazine.

Also, it has been reported that sandwhich bags commonly available in
grocery stores will cause the magazine to fade due to both the bags
and the paper Playboy is printed on are clay based.

  * Bags Unlimited has free samples (first time only), I recommend
  products SMAG3 or SMAGL3.

- I've found a source for bags/backing boards. What size do I need?

The size bag you need depends on the size of each magazine, and
whether or not you also plan on using acid free backing boards. For
recent issues, 8 1/2" x 11" should be ok. I recomend a flap of at
least 1 1/2". For older issues, especially Christmas issues from the
Eighties, or if you want to use acid free backing boards, 9" x 11"
is pretty much a minimum. If you can find them, bags that are
slightly longer than 11" (11 1/8" or more) are great. If you put
the magazine and board in the bag and it bends or warps, you need a
  wider bag.
